2010 PEN/Faulkner Literary Award winner

The PEN/Faulkner Award is a program set up by the PEN/Faulkner Foundation that issues literary awards for fictional work created during the year. It is specifically meant for living American citizen’s who have published their works during the ‘award year’. The PEN/Faulkner Award foundation was established with the help of William Faulkner and Mary Lee Settle.   After winning the Nobel Prize in 1949 Faulkner donated his winnings to establish this association. Typically there are five nominees for the awards, the winner is chosen by a panel of what the organization refers to as a ‘peer jury’. In addition to the monetary award the foundation offers the winner and the runners up the chance to read their work at the Folger Shakespeare Library’s ‘Great Hall’
The 2010 PEN/Faulkner fiction Award was awarded to Sherman Alexie for his book War Dances.   A poet, novelist and short story writer Alexie’s War dances is a collection of poems and short stories. Aside from this award Alexie has also received various honors over the years such as being included in the ‘Twenty Best American Novelists Under 40’ list by Granta Magazine.
